A SHORT while later, the rat-faced man pulled open the door of an unremarkable sedan and sat. The tall woman, broad-shouldered and gorgeous, was sitting in the driver’s seat, staring fixedly at the street ahead of them.

“He’s taken care of,” the man said with a shrug. “Quiet. They won’t find him for some time.”

“You got everything we need?” she asked, voice disinterested.

The rat-faced man nodded. “More than we expected,” he said, raising an eyebrow. “The boy has taken a lover. A bartender from a local restaurant.”

The woman frowned. “He’ll want to know. Make the call—include everything.”

He nodded again, pulled out his phone, and dialed quickly. It rang twice before a cultured voice on the other end spoke.

“We’ve got him, monsieur,” the rat-faced man said. His voice changed, dropping the pretension of before, smoothing into a broad accent. He nodded at something the other said, then handed the phone to the woman.

“Bonsoir,” she said, listened intently for a few moments, then nodded. “As you say. We will be discreet. Oui, oui. Au revoir.” She hung up, having received their orders.

The rat-faced man looked at her expectantly. “Well?”

“Put on your seatbelt,” she said, turning the ignition with a bored expression. The car roared to life beneath them. “We have work to do.”
